De Renava – 1st edition of the Contemporary Art Biennial in Bonifacio

Strange wooden constructions on the side of the impluvium or the cisterna of Bonifacio have been attracting the eye of passers-by for several weeks now. These symbols and arrangements represent all the works realized by Prisca Meslier and Dumè Marcellesi to implement the first Biennial of contemporary art in Bonifacio. The Name? De Renava.

The concept? A tour of the Old Town to view contemporary artworks by 13 internationally renowned artists.

The plus? An exhibition in highly symbolic heritage sites, some of which have not been open or accessible to the public for a significant period of time and which will become private again after the biennial.

The venues?

  • Chapelle Saint-Roch with Mélissa Epaminondi
  • Jardin du Bastion with Anish Kapoor
  • Cisterna with Mat Collishaw
  • Palazzino with Nil Yalter et Isaac Julien
  • Caserne française with Kara Walker, NUNCA, Barry McGee, Sara Sadik, Latifa Echakhch, Rineke Dijkstra, Mao Tao + Capsule Room (local artist)
  • Impluvium avec Ange Leccia

The artworks? The Biennial mainly proposes video art installations and experiments linked to new technologies.

The philosophy? Contrary to popular belief, contemporary art is not a discipline accessible only to the initiated.  The De Renava team is keen to share these major works with the public. Particularly with the Corsican public, by means of the monthly programming of island artists during the exhibition.
