Holy Week

Bonifacio, a unique landscape between the Citadel, the cliffs, the Navy, the islands etc ... But the city also offers an original face via its religious life and the famous Bonifacian brotherhoods.

Description

Holy Week, from 05 to 12 April 2020.
Holy Week is celebrated everywhere in Corsica, but in Bonifacio, the celebration is impressive because it has the largest number of brotherhoods in Corsica. The brotherhoods of Saint-Barthélémy, Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, Saint-Erasme, Sainte-Croix and Saint-Jean-Baptiste organize processions traversing the streets of the city.
Each procession is formed by a small wooden shrine, in the Baroque style, richly decorated with sculptures of saints and illuminated by cartatorci (sort of lanterns around the hunts). These dreadfully heavy sockets are carried by several men and are preceded and followed by dozens of devotees in costume.
The most famous are the processions which take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
