Go back in time with this walk and its multiple charms. Meander through the commerce filled streets and stop at the Place de la République: you cannot miss the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, dating back to the 16th century. Your walk will take you to the Genoese Gate where you can see the salt marshes and the marina. Not forgetting the Fortress of France that has today been transformed into an exhibition hall and lookout.
Description
Formerly known as the “Bastione della Marina”, the Fortress of France was an impregnable fortified stronghold. Built by the Genoese in 1542, it is solid and its architecture has large arrow slits, a large vaulted hall leading to small “guard” courtyard and a strategic watch turret. From here navigation in the port could be monitored day and night. Today it has been restored and is used as an exhibition centre welcoming important cultural events.
