The Fortress of the Standard, an emblematic site to visit

The Bastion de l’Étendard, an emblematic place to visit: you will travel through the centuries and understand Bonifacio a little more by visiting the landscaped garden with its 10 views, as well as the “1000 years of history” exhibition in the halls underground.

Dating from the 15th century, dominating the port from a height of 25 meters, the Bastion de l’Étendard is the highest bastion in France. It is imposing, it is the centerpiece of the fortifications!

The Landscape Garden: 10 viewpoints to understand everything. The outdoor course is so beautiful that it has been so named. Allow 20 minutes for a walk to contemplate the plunging views of the port and the sensational panoramas of the cliffs and Sardinia. A description of the landscapes will be given to you.

The underground rooms: the exhibition 1000 years of fortifications. Partly dug into the rock, the underground rooms alone are worth the detour! The rotunda vaults of the large circular room are reminiscent of the medieval architecture of the old defense tower… A museography, punctuated by panels and video projections, retraces the history of the city’s fortifications. An exhibition rich in visual documents, sometimes unpublished, but which remains within everyone’s reach!

Not to be missed for families: for children from 7 to 12 years old (you must be able to read), ask at the entrance for the booklet- illustrated and free game and follow Fanfan the flying donkey! And for the little ones, don’t panic, they can also have fun with medieval helmets.

Visiting the Fortress of the Standard is a must in Bonifacio, as is The King of Aragon’s Stairway. And if you look at the prices and do the math: with the Monuments Pass, you save 2 euros. That’s 25%! This is all the more interesting since the Escalier du Roy d’Aragon and the Bastion de l’Étendard are monuments that offer two very different views.
