Le Gouvernail (The Rudder): An unusual view over the Strait. Situated just by the marine cemetery at the far end of the peninsula, this military site is a long tunnel of 168 steps dug into the cliff.

Description

This stairway ends in an underground room 10 m above sea level and offers the most unusual view over the Strait of Bonifacio. Below, the shape of Le Gouvernail (The Rudder) inspired the local fishermen to give its name.

Built in 1880 by French military engineers, Le Gouvernail (the Rudder) was the watchtower at the entry to the port and the Strait of Bonifacio. Equipped with a powerful projector able to illuminate the Strait right to the Sardinian coastline during the night.
